Still Speaking after 31 Years in Heaven

Share Your Memories of Keith Green

Keith Green FB Share Your Memo
We want to give everyone an opportunity to share their memories of how Jesus used Keith to impact their life.  And gather all the stories in one place for everyone to enjoy.

Keith sure impacted my life.  After Jesus, he was my biggest influence.  Keith modeled giving everything to Jesus, not wanting celebrity, caring for the poor, taking people off the streets, and reaching into prisons.  We did that from the start together.

I would love to know what your story is.  How did Keith impact your life?  Were you at a concert?  Was it through the music?  Are you in ministry?  On the mission field?

How did Keith impact you, and what are you doing now that you think you might not be doing — if not for his influence?

Please share your story in the comment section below.

I’ll start!

Hi again, I just read your bio and see that it is you, Melody, who penned the lyrics. Then my heart was in line with your's! I came across Keith's music for the first time just two years after his passing. It has been such a blessing to me. Thank you for your faithfulness. The fact that you kept this ministry going after Keith died is evidence to your own deep relationship with and commitment to God.

I remember hearing Keith at a church in the Valley (California) in the early 70's. I was sitting in the front row and he walks out, sits at a piano and starts playing as the sun from the roof comes in a window and the rays shine down on him as he starts singing The Easter Song. I was stunned in Blessed slinence and heard his heart singing to the Lord as though no one else was listening. Amazing! When he and his two children (the two on his lap) were killed in a plane crash with a family of 6 and the pilot (I was on my way to work) I pulled over and cried. A peace came over me as I sat in my car as if to say "His heart was pure and his children are angels they and the others are safe here with Me."

As a new Christian, Keith and Melody's music and ministry really helped me to grow in my new found faith. Of course I was devastated by Keith's death and my husband and I got involved with the Memorial Concerts. We grew so much and had great fellowship with other people who helped plan the Concert in Detroit. I had a dream after Keith and the children passed away. I dreamt of a cluster of grapes. They were all green except for one. It was red. Kind of like a tomato. When the red tomato/grape was taken off, the rest of the grapes turned red. I felt that it was showing that many would "ripen" as a result of Keith's death. I still remember it, all these years later, and I believe it came to pass. So thankful that Melody has continued to share the gifts that God has given her.

Awesome stories! I also became acquainted with Keith after he had finished the race, but he has been a huge impact on my life! I loved the book "No Compromise" and appreciated the struggles that Keith had in totally giving his life to God. BUT WHEN HE DID, just wow! The testimony of him struggling to give all he had to Jesus and then the victory he felt when done had me on my knees doing the same! His passion and "In your face with the Truth" lyrics still convict my heart to follow Christ with all my heart! Thank you Lord for letting Keith visit us for the time he did, and the gifts he left! I remember hearing Steve Camp give an account to how Keith also challenged him in his life. The influence has been great! Thank you Melody for carrying on the flame that burned in that man's heart! I love seeing pictures of him and the joy of the Lord in his eyes. His songs keep sending the message of his heart and sending me to my knees to repent and follow! And we have so many lost still that need Jesus! "Do you see, Do you see all the people sinking down, Don't you care, don't you care, or are you going to let them drown?" Thank you God, Keith, and Melody!

My earliest memories of actually worshiping the lord was dancing in our living room to the "Keith Green" records that my mom used to play on a daily basses. To this day(almost thirty years later) these same beautiful songs still bring me into the Lords presence. The song "Rushing Wind" is my prayer for each day. Thank You Keith & Melody for being so obedient to the Lord. Your music has definitely strengthened my relationship with Jesus :)

I still listen to Keith, and his message is even more relevant today than it was 30 years ago. He was an exceptional musician, but never wanted to be treated as a superstar. It wasn't about Keith, or even his music, it was always about Jesus. He is surely missed, but he has left us a life and a legacy to follow.

I was raised in a very musical family on Keith's music and credit his heart and musicianship for inspiring me to be a musician. My Grandparents were dear friends of Brother and Sister Ravenhill, so they were able to spend time with them in Texas and were blessed by Keith's music there. My Dad and uncles remember spending time with Keith and having him play for bible studies in Brother Ravenhill's living room. Keith's music and authenticity inspired me to become a worship leader for many of my high school years and on through college and now a full-time pastor for the last 5-years. I was incredibly blessed by the way God used Keith to spur me on toward service and ministry!

I "met" Keith Green my freshman year at Westmont College in '78-,79'. I was introduced to him by my dorm-mates listening to his music. I had never heard of him and my first thoughts were 1) This man is echoing the yearnings in my own heart to pursue Jesus 100%. 2) He was using "rock 'n roll" music to do it! (What would my fundamentalist parents do? People even danced to his music - was it sinful if one danced to praise and worship music?) But Jesus spoke so powerfully to me through Keith's music that I didn't care about the style (I liked it!)but I was anxious to share it with my family back home. They didn't appreciate it- my mom was offended by "To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice". I didn't care - I kept listening and listening - to this day! Keith put words to my emotions and soul and opened my eyes to the Charismatic movement at its best! It took years to lift my hands in praise and decades to lift my arms! Because of the Holy Spirit using Keith's and Second Chapter of Acts' music, I -one of the frozen chosen - am nearly completely thawed!

Back in the late 70’s early 80's, not good a dates anymore, I was a new believer attending Warehouse Ministries in Sacramento, CA. I finally talked my husband into going to a concert at Warehouse with me. Randy Stonehill was to come to play that night. When we got to the concert Pastor Lewis Neely started out by telling us that Randy Stonehill couldn’t come but he referred Lewis to a new name who he thought could come – Keith Green, Lewis had not heard of Keith so he called a few other groups including Second Chapter of Acts, all could not come and referred Lewis to Keith Green. He called one more group Gentle Faith, they said sure we can come but we have a new piano player named Keith Green, by then Lewis said come on up as this must be the will of God. Thus started a long & successful relationship between Warehouse Ministries and Keith. It was though Keith’s Ministry and singing that night that began the softening to a professed atheist to begin the opening of his heart to let Jesus in. I especially remember him playing a fun song called, “Give
Me Cash” or Cash. I can see him sitting at the piano playing his hear out with his hair bobbing back and forth!

A few years later Keith’s pastor at the time, forgot his name, was to come and speak at a retreat for Warehouse Ministries. I really wanted to go but my husband, Bill, felt we were to stay home and babysit so someone else could be blessed. Well the day of the retreat we still had not heard and Bill still felt NO we were to watch someone kids. A few hours later Lewis called and asked if we could watch Keith and Melody’s foster children so they could also attend this retreat. What a blessing it was for my husband to stick to his guns and not let his domineering-wife talk him out of his conviction. It was a faith builder for Bill and myself, not to mention what a joy it was to have those children stay with us

We had a few other surprise visits from Keith, like the time he just showed up a Springs of Living Water one time while we were there for a retreat. We received your Last Days News Letters for many years.

Not to talk too much but one last thing I would like to share… We moved to Boise back in 1994 and on the way to Idaho were listening to a cassette of Keith’s when the tape broke. I made a statement like, “It’s too bad they did not make Keith’s albums into CD’s. When we arrived in Boise we found the local Christian bookstore and my daughter yelled out in the store, “Mom come quick, they did put Keith’s songs into CD’s”. The young lady helping her asked what a person my age would be listening and so interested in Keith Green for, I stated that if Keith was still alive he would be my age. We then shard many good stories about Keith and our interactions. Because of our interest in finding Keith’s music again, God used it to lead us to our new Church family. And this was how our daughter found her first friends in a new state, and plugged us into his family in Idaho.

God Bless you Melody and Lord thank you for giving Keith to us for the time that you allowed.

Who can't remember the first time they heard the words - "You prefer the light from your TV, you love the world but you're avoiding me!" My college roommate and I waited with anticipation for every new Keith Green album. My girlfriend and I saw him with a baby grand at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, in 1977. We married in 1978 and went on the road with a band called Maskil. Keith always challenged me to reach as a songwriter. To tell the truth. To not be afraid to "say it" in a song when appropriate. And yet, Keith, also taught me not to perform - but to worship. I will always be thankful for his influence in my life - his music, his word smithing, his heart. I don't exactly know what he's been up to in heaven - but I hope they have a baby grand up there!
