Still Speaking after 31 Years in Heaven

Share Your Memories of Keith Green

Keith Green FB Share Your Memo
We want to give everyone an opportunity to share their memories of how Jesus used Keith to impact their life.  And gather all the stories in one place for everyone to enjoy.

Keith sure impacted my life.  After Jesus, he was my biggest influence.  Keith modeled giving everything to Jesus, not wanting celebrity, caring for the poor, taking people off the streets, and reaching into prisons.  We did that from the start together.

I would love to know what your story is.  How did Keith impact your life?  Were you at a concert?  Was it through the music?  Are you in ministry?  On the mission field?

How did Keith impact you, and what are you doing now that you think you might not be doing — if not for his influence?

Please share your story in the comment section below.
I’ll start!

Keith and his music was different than anything I ever heard in church! First saw Keith at Calvary Chapel Riverside, now known as Harvest Christian Fellowship, his joy and clear message was life changing. He was a pioneer, one of a kind, with John the Baptist boldness that impacted me and countless others. I thank God for allowing me to witness Keith's ministry and to join in sharing in Keith Green's memory.

This is from a chapter in a book I wrote about my life, called "Pieces of Grace."

Some big things happened in my life when I was 10. As mentioned in my last post, I performed in my own recital. I had spent 2 years preparing and practicing for it. In anticipation of this event, I felt nothing but nerves - after it was over, nothing but joy and relief and a sense of accomplishment. Also at the age of 10, my mom and dad took my sister, Tricia, and I to our first Jesus West Coast. This was a weekend long festival of Christian music and teaching. We camped there as a family for 3 days.

I'm sure there were many wonderful Christian artists and speakers that weekend. But they all faded in my memory in comparison to the moppy-haired man who played the piano and sang. His name was Keith Green - he was largely unknown at the time (hard to imagine, huh?), as his first album had just been released. As he stepped to the piano and prepared to play, I had no idea what was about to hit me. His "performance" was electric with passion. He burned up the piano with his playing, and his personality was almost manic with excitement about Jesus.

We went home from Jesus West Coast with a Keith Green album (supposedly for my parents) and a Music Machine album (remember that?) for my sister and me. Little did my parents know how much Keith Green's performance had affected me. I went home, and played the Keith Green album incessantly, and I'm afraid Music Machine saw very little light of day :)! Soon, my parents ordered me a Keith Green music book, and I learned every song in it.

As mentioned before, I learned to sing and play these songs for church. My dad, sister and I sang many of them together, while I accompanied at the piano. We eventually signed up for his newsletter in order to be informed every time a new album was released. We ordered them all, as well as all the music books. To say these albums were favorites of mine would be an understatement. My memory is a bit foggy, but I think we saw him in concert at least 2 more times. I remember he preached more than he sang and played, but I enjoyed seeing his passion, no matter what form it took. Through his newsletters, we followed his life as he moved from So. California to Texas, and as he and his wife had their first child, then another, then another. Coincidentally, his second child was born within a few months of my youngest sister, in 1980, and they have the same name, Bethany Grace.

I will never forget where I was on a summer day in 1982, when I found out that Keith Green had been killed in a plane crash. I was at home, and my mom was watching Good Morning America. They reported the crash in the news portion of the program. He, his 2 oldest children, and another entire family were killed. His pregnant wife and youngest child were not in the plane. I was shocked and distressed, to put it mildly. I immediately went over to my friend's house down the street and told her, and we both cried and listened to his albums and sang his songs together, while I played the piano. My good friend, Nancy, was almost as big a fan as I was.

His last album was recorded shortly before the crash, but had not been released. We already had an order in for it, even before he died. As soon as it arrived, I took it over to Nancy's house, and we listened to the whole thing together. The album was his first, and last, worship album. It still is my favorite of his.

Keith Green was not necessarily an idol of mine, like Cindy was. I just loved him. At the tender age of 10, his music spoke to my heart and urged me into a vibrant relationship with Jesus. I desperately wanted to have that same relationship with God and passion that Keith Green had. I can still remember how my soul seemed to swell with life whenever I listened to his music.

My husband grew up with Keith Green's music, as well. The REALLY neat thing is now our children have grown up with his music. For some reason, his music has never gone out of style! And all my kids love it almost as much as I did when I was their age! I thank the Lord Jesus for ministering His grace to me through Keith Green's music. God, you are so Good to me!

I was about 25 when I first heard Keith at a Sonrise Concert in Michigan. His honesty, boldness, love, and integrity captured my attention, but His pure heart of worship completely undid me. I could not get enough of his music! One of my favorite songs is How Can They Live Without Jesus? There really isn't one I don't like. His Holy Spirit bathed music touched my heart so very deeply, and marked me forever. Even today, when I hear his music,it makes me want to just settle into the lap of God and snuggle in.
I was blessed to see Keith in concert two more times, those were very precious treasures each time. I learned more of the true heart of God from him than anywhere else. He birthed a heart of worship in me and a depth of the love of God that still burns in me today. Thank you for sharing him with us Melody! God bless you and your family!

I am only 28 years old myself, but as a teenager I heard Keith's music and it really impacted my heart. Then I got the DVD of his life story with interviews by his friends and Melody and I found it really inspiring. I love his passion for the Lord and the lost. It was all or nothing with him. Now that I have children of my own, I am inspired by him offering his own kids to God. And most of all, I think it is remarkable that this man who died 3 years before I was born has impacted my life. Thanks so much, Melody, for sharing his life and keeping the faith. Blessings on you and yours.

Keith Green impacted my life more than almost any other individual. As a musician, and a new Christian in the late 70's, I loved and was encouraged and inspired by his passion and his ability to write and sing such meaningful songs. I was a college student in SoCal, and went to one of the last concerts Keith gave before his homegoing. What a blessing that was! His unrestrained love for God just poured out of his music. I play the piano in my church, and continue to play Oh Lord, You're Beautiful, Psalm 23, There Is A Redeemer, and No Compromise, on a regular basis. May God continue to bless the ministry you have continued, Melody, and sustain you each day.

Keith's music first had a significant impact on my life in college in the last 70s-early 80s. I used cassettes of his albums as studying music. But the lyrics were so powerful that I took them to heart. In a time when Contemporary Christian music was starting to grow, Keith stood out as a man who based his music on the word of God and preached it unapologetically.

I later became a DJ at a Christian Music station in my hometown of Salem, Oregon and was honored to play his music heavily. I had left the station to become a radio news reporter at another location, but kept in touch with my co-workers at the Christian station. I remember tuning in the afternoon that Keith's plane went down, and tearing up at the loss of his music and his message. I have all of his albums on CD and listen to them all the time. The words are as powerful as they were three decades ago. Thank you, Lord for allowing your servant Keith to influence me and so many others during his time on earth!

Keith Green's music and testimony greatly impacted my life 26 years after his death. The first Keith Green song I ever heard was, "Oh Lord You're Beautiful" this was just an introduction for me to Keith's music. His songs greatly impacted my heart for the nations and the spreading of the gospel.

I met Jacob Damkani and his love for the Jews and his love for the believers was paramount in my journey of evangelism, this was all a result of Kieth's ministry who disciple d Jacob when he was a new believer. this ripple effect touched my life and many school students today and still does as I share my faith this is a joy in my life and I will never be the same again thank you

It was 1991 when I began to listen to Keith's music. I had 4 cassette tapes of almost every song he ever did. I played them so much that the tapes broke. I had to tape them back together and just accept that that brief moment where the repair was would be lost forever.

Honestly, his boldness and passion had such an impact on me so many years later, as well as my wife. It has encouraged me to live a stronger walk with the Lord and to be bold in my own life. It is amazing how enduring the work of God is to continue moving through his words and music.

Where do I start? In my younger days, when my dad was a bit healthier and much happier, Keiths music was what connected us both. Stained Glass is the only song I can listen to and go back to those fond memories. Now, Keiths music is still what brings us together.
In my own personal life his music is what pushes me to want to be closer to God. He definitely provided a platform for me to do that.
